Non sunt multiplicanda entia praeter necessitatem.

Entities are not to be multiplied beyond necessity.

Born around 1285, William of Ockham was an English philosopher and monk. Somewhere between that time and 1349 he said, "What can be done with fewer assumptions is done in vain with more".
